So much of boxing is based on capitalizing on that big opportunity when it arises. On March 16th at the Home Depot Center, California, Wale ‘Lucky Boy’ Omotoso gets the opportunity of his boxing lifetime fighting against fellow undefeated fighter Jessie Vargas on HBO telecast. ThaBoxingVoice had the chance to catch-up with Lucky boy in the eve of the fight.
Omotoso came from rough and humble beginnings, on the streets of Lagos, Nigeria, one of the most dangerous cities in the world. As part of a gang throughout his childhood, the ‘Lucky Boy’ nickname arose from his ability to survive, against the odds and turn his plight into a professional boxing career in Australia after his talents were brought the attention of an Australian trainer, who was in Nigeria to train another fighter.
These life events have given ‘Lucky Boy’ a strong sense of faith, referring to and thanking God many times during the interview and a extremely positive attitude to his life and his boxing career.
“I’m very, very happy for this opportunity,” he gleamed, when asked about his thoughts on the fight.
“I have this opportunity, fighting on HBO, for the first time, I’m so excited brother I won’t lie to you. I’m scared I’m happy, I’m just full of energy and am ready to go,” He added, full of excitement.
Although both fighters fall under the ‘contender’ bracket, Vargas has had far more public exposure to point, even considering at times he has flattered to deceive. ‘Lucky Boy’ didn’t appear phased by this and gave an honest assessment.
“I know this kid is a talented kid, everyone knows him, no one knows me, and this is boxing.”
‘Lucky Boy” is an aggressive, come forward power puncher while Vargas by contrast is a crafty, elusive counter puncher who has the ability to smother and unsettle his opponents. When asked of any concerns of Vargas stylistically he responded, “I know he’s a little bit of a funny fighter. He holds, he moves around, he throws combinations, that’s the gamelan we’ve been working on in the gym and I will make sure I stay on my game to get the victory. Anything he brings to the table we have an answer for it.”
‘Lucky Boy’ isn’t the type of fighter to trash talk or look ahead to future fights, when asked his dismissively said he only looks at the opponent in front of him and doesn’t get involved in deciding who he fights.
“The reason I have a promoter is for them to know what is right for me at the time, so I’m going to leave all that to my promoter (Top Rank) I’m ready to go, anybody they bring out there to face I’m ready.”
‘Lucky Boy” has been in California to train at the Wildcard Gym to be trained and managed by Freddie Roach and signed with Top Rank promotions, having solidified his team he’ll be now looking to take a significant step towards a world championship.
