As most fight fans already know, former U.S.A. Olympian and former Jr. Middleweight title challenger Vanes Martirosyan (33-1-1 21Ko’s) will be making his return to the ring on March 21st.  Martirosyan will be facing Argentine veteran Luciano Cuello (33-3 17Ko’s) and the bout will be televised live on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

Martirosyan turned pro soon after the 2004 summer Olympic Games in Athens Greece.  Though Martirosyan did not medal in the Olympic Games he had a very successful amateur career holding victories over Timothy Bradley, Andre Berto and Austin Trout.  However, Martirosyan hasn’t been able to be as impressive as a professional thus far.  It seems as though every time he steps up his competition he doesn’t look/perform as good.  His most notable wins are against Saul Roman, Kassim Ouma and Joe Green.  Martirosyan has some good qualities such as his height and reach advantages at the 154lb weight class as well as his deep amateur background.  He also has decent hand speed and can move around the ring well.

On the other hand, Luciano Cuello is an experienced Jr. Middleweight who recently gave undefeated prospect Willie Nelson all he can handle.  Cuello has won the WBC Latino Light Middleweight Title among a few other regional titles in the past.  He possesses decent punching power and has a good chin.  He has also been in the ring with Saul Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chaves Jr.  However, Cuello doesn’t offer anything special and is a basic fighter.   He is the type of fighter to be used as a barometer for a fighter like Vanes Martirosyan and a young prospect like Willie Nelson to let the trainers and promoters know where there fighter is.

If Vanes Martirosyan still has any dreams and aspirations of becoming a world champion, he must not only win but look impressive at the same time.  Vanes is going to be getting great exposure on national television and he has to make the best of it in order to get back on HBO.  If he fails to win or look impressive, it will be a major blow for his career especially as a top ten contender in the Jr. Middleweight division.
