Jessie VargasAccording to ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael, Jessie Vargas has filed a formal appeal with the California State Athletic Commission over the controversial ending of his unanimous decision loss to Timothy Bradley. Jessie Vargas wants his decision to be changed to a no contest because of a mishap that referee Pat Russell made in the closing seconds of round 12 in his fight with Bradley.

Vargas while down on the cards, landed a massive right hand that seemed to have Bradley out on his feet. While Vargas came into pounce to go for a knockdown, referee Pat Russell mistakenly took the 10-second warning as the final bell, breaking up the two men to end the fight.

Vargas had thought Russell had waved the fight off and scored a come from behind knockout of Tim Bradley. That wasn’t the case as there was still seven seconds left, and Russell thought the fight had ended.

In the telecast, HBO’s Max Kellerman had stated, “Lost in all this was that Jessie Vargas had Tim Bradley out on his feet.”

While that may be true or not, a lot of the sentiment on social media is that if Tim Bradley survived being concussed from a much bigger puncher in Ruslan Provodnikov, then he was definitely surviving seven more seconds with Jessie Vargas.

While that may be true, this is boxing, and we just may never know what would have happened if Vargas would have gotten those extra seconds. Because of such circumstances, Vargas said he wanted a rematch which is something Bradley may or may not want as he is slated to face Sadam Ali next.

Commission Executive Officer Andy Foster told Rafael that it had not decided whether it will hear the appeal. “I am reviewing his supporting documentation,” Foster told ESPN.com. According to the report, if the appeal is heard, it won’t be until late August, early September.
