box_g_vargas1x_576Jessie Vargas now improves to 26-0 by out boxing Antonio DeMarco 31-3-1  for the majority of the rounds. This was supposed to be a showcase fight for the more technical, stronger fighter, but Demarco was determined to give Vargas all he can handle.

In the first half of the fight Vargas used his boxing skills to slowly pick DeMarco  apart. Despite suffering a cut right under his left eye due to a clash of heads in the second round, Vargas maintained his composure and continued to pot shot DeMarco. It wasn’t until the 5th round when DeMarco  landed a solid right hand that altered the momentum of the fight momentarily.

DeMarco  began showing his will to win, by continuously inviting Vargas into exchanges. In the 7th and 9th rounds it seemed as if Vargas’ energy level was beginning to drop, but he still managed to keep the tempo of the fight in his favor. Vargas continued to counter, and use his boxing skills to edge out the championship rounds.

At the end of the fight Vargas was clearly the winner and received a 116-112 scorecard from all three judges. Vargas got the win, but he may have not displayed enough to be considered as one of the premier fighters in the light welterweight division. Vargas at age 25 certainly has plenty of time to develop, and it will be interesting to see how he does when he steps it up in competition.
