Victor_Postol_28The deal has been reached for Danny Garcia and his mandatory challenger Viktor Postol, but it isn’t for the two to fight. Instead, a deal has been reached to keep the two from fighting each other next and possibly ever.

The WBC released a statement that said “both parties have reached an agreement, the specific details of which will be announced in the near future.”

Garcia is, of course, managed by Al Haymon and there were rumors that Haymon was working with Golden Boy to help finalize a deal with Postol’s camp made up of co-promoters Elite Boxing and Top Rank and manager Vadim Kornilov for the mandatory defense to take place.

Now, it looks like Garcia will square off against another fighter in the Haymon stable, possibly Lamont Peterson, while Postol has taken step aside money from Haymon to secure Garcia’s freedom to defend his WBC junior welterweight title.

Postol’s manager Kornilov refused to give an exact dollar amount, telling ESPN.com ““There is a step-aside agreement that we have finalized with Al and Golden Boy.”

The interim bouts have to take place by the end of February.

“Postol and Garcia will both [have] an option to take other fights in the next four months and then Postol will again be in the mandatory position,” Kornilov said.

This is the perfect distraction, money and guarantees, but ultimately Haymon has other plans in the works and it would appear that Garcia-Postol is not going to happen, ever. Garcia will likely vacate the title and move up, as opposed to keeping the WBC belt and defending it against Postol.

Kornilov tells ESPN that they will focus on the immediate before returning to the bigger issue.

“We want to have Viktor fight by the end of the year, but we have an agreement that he fights on Garcia’s undercard as an option if we want to.”
