Axeman-and-father-prJob Walters the father of Nicholas Walters was definitely pleased on his son’s stoppage over Nonito Donaire. He said, “I really enjoyed it. It was a birthday gift for me,” but despite Walters’ overall satisfaction of his son’s performance, he still sees room for improvement.

Walters explains, “I planned for a 4th round knockout, but what happened was he wasn’t following instructions enough. He was tense a little too much early. He was trying to catch Donaire with too much of a hard shot. I told him in training that Donaire wouldn’t be an easy person, you have to work for it. He wasn’t trying to throw the combinations to get it [the knockout] which is why it went a little longer.”

He also explained why he wasn’t too impressed after his knocked down Donaire for the first time. “When he knocked him down the first time. It wasn’t a pleasing knockdown because it wasn’t a combination knockdown. If he had put a combination knockdown, he would have knocked him out. I wasn’t pleased with that knockdown because he didn’t put it together, when he did […] the fight was over.”

It’s obvious his father expects a lot from his son, but is proud of his accomplishments. His father claimed he always knew his son would turn into the great fighter. He would actually interview his son when he was child, as if he was a world champion.

Walters said, “I was interviewing my son since he was nine years old. [I would say] you are talking to HBO. I was doing that and it became reality. I knew it since the past, and nothing surprised me.”

Walters was also told Johnny Gonzalez showed interest in fighting his son. Walters responded, “Maybe he’s going to change his mind, I’m glad he said that. I don’t care who comes, I’ve trained my boy since he was 6 years old.”

The Walters camp is confident they can beat anyone in their weight class, and one can’t blame their self-assurance. Nicholas Walters has power, speed, and a great boxing IQ. He is definitely a force to reckon with in the featherweight division.
