Following his 12 round unanimous decision victory over Miguel Cotto for the lineal middleweight championship and WBC belt, Canelo Alvarez had three weeks to come to terms on a fight with Gennady Golovkin who happens to be the interim WBC champion and mandatory challenger.
The deadline was supposed to be Friday, December 11, but the WBC announced that the deadline has been extended until Monday.
WBC president, Mauricio Sulaiman, issued a statement explaining that the two teams are making progress towards a potential showdown between the two stars.
“That bout carries enormous implications and is of great importance for boxing, both in terms of history and for the future of the sport,” Sulaiman stated. “Many details must be addressed for a super fight of that magnitude to actually occur. The boxers’ respective promoters, Golden Boy Promotions and K2 Promotions, have been communicating in good faith to finalize the details of the negotiations for the contest to come to fruition.
“Recognizing that their discussions have been ongoing, the WBC has given the parties the flexibility to continue to work amicably to finalize terms, with the ultimate goal being that the two champions meet in the ring.”
Golden Boy Promotions(Alvarez) and K2 Promotions(Golovkin) will meet with Sulaiman on Monday and hope to get a deal done sealing the fight most likely for September of 2016 with each fighter having a bout in the spring before their respective showdown.
Canelo Alvarez has already stated that it is his plan to fight in May and September next year, which are the Mexican holiday months and traditionally always provide big fight weekends.
