Saul Canelo Alvarez Miguel CottoSo just how big is the fight between Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez. Most industry experts would predict a 7 figure pay-per-view buy rate with a massive gate depending on the venue. It is the classic Mexico versus Puerto Rico rivalry. Cotto’s WBC Middleweight title would be on the line in what would likely be a catchweight belt.

Mauricio Sulaiman, who is the President of the WBC, says it would be the most important fight between both nations since Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. and Hector Camacho Jr.

“It would be the most important in the rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico since Julio Cesar Chavez and Hector Camacho,” Sulaiman told ESPN Deportes. “It would rival such big fights as Chavez-Camacho, Sanchez-Gomez, Rosario-Ramirez, and Lopez-Ramirez.”

Cotto has options and Sulaiman knows this. Along with possibly fighting Canelo Alvarez, Sulaiman feels Miguel Cotto could also be in line to face Floyd Mayweather, Jr. But the winner of Cotto-Canelo must face Golovkin next for the WBC title.

“The Canelo fight has been talked about for a year with Cotto,” stated the WBC President. “I think it’s close and will happen with the approval of the mandatory, Gennady Golovkin.”

Canelo was adamant this year of taking away the traditional Mexican boxing dates in May and September from Mayweather. He attempted to do so this year but could not compete with a fight involving Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

Mayweather is expected to return in September and has already booked the MGM Grand for September 12th in what could be his last fight. But is there a fight out there that could go head to head if Cotto and Canelo were to happen in September?

Sulaiman feels the fight could happen in September but more likely in October or November.

“Cotto fought well; Canelo fought well. That fight is going to happen this year. There is time for it to happen in September, but it would be more likely in October and November.”
