Tyson Fury, Deontay WilderTyson Fury, since becoming the heavyweight champion, has ruffled the feathers of more than a few people around the world, including WBC heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder, who had a response to the Gypsy warrior. In a media conference call on Wednesday for Wilders third title defense vs Artur Szpilka on January 16th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Deontay gave his thoughts on Tyson, specifically on how Fury has handled his win against Klitschko and the possibility of a future fight between the two.

Wilder started off with a verbal jab shared by most who watched the fight. Wilder stated, “”I definitely saw the parts of the fight while I was awake!” The fight did receive complaints and  most referred to it as a snoozer, which is in direct contrast to Wilder’s recent fights as he has produced much more excitement and action.

Fury seemed frustrated after the fight at the post-fight press conference when a reporter brought Deontay’s name up, questioning why his name was being mentioned and calling him a basketball player. Wilder didn’t appear to take offense to that remark.

“The comments that he referred to me, well, everybody is entitled to their own opinion…Words don’t hurt me.” Wilder continued on about Fury and his brash personality.

“Most people are only like that for the cameras. When they’re in person they’re like best friends to me…You say this crazy stuff when you feel like you won’t be heard or seen and, when you come in on a personal level, you change into this loving, giddy kind of person.”

It is clear that Wilder thinks Fury calling him out and firing all these shots at him is a sign that Fury respects Deontay as a fighter and a fight between the two would be a pick em’ fight all the way. Wilder still believes that a fight between the two 6’7+ heavyweights is inevitable, plus, Wilder now has another reason to go after Fury: Fury’s recent call out of former heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis, who he apparently apologized to after the fight, who is also a friend of Deontay’s,

“I think it’s still going to be the biggest thing that is happening if he continues to have this belt, but even more now because I don’t like something that he did…I didn’t like what he said about Lennox Lewis, so I’m going to whoop him for Lennox.”

It is clear that Fury vs Wilder is a fight that would include a comedic tone on a genius level, and possibly an extremely fun fight in the ring, but the potential build-up of the fight alone should make it priority #1 for fights to make in the heavyweight division.
