Better late than never, it’s the weekend and weekdays winners and losers for the boxing week.
Biggest Winner-PBC Lower weight fighters: Maybe it’s because I always been appreciative of the little guys but so far the Premier Boxing Champions Series has flourished with the lower weight fighters. Last Sunday, we saw another fun fight between Jamie McDonnell and Tomoki Kameda. I thought McDonnell won a very close fight and saw no issue with other guy getting the nod. Then yesterday, we say a fun scrap between Jorge Lara and Jesus Rojas even if the draw and stoppage due to cuts didn’t sit well with me.
You can add those fights with the Leo Santa Cruz-Abner Mares fight and the Warren-Payano fight to the smaller weight fighters delivering. Of course Kameda-McDonnell one was a fight of the year contender.
Biggest Losers-Matchmaking in the PBC Main Events: Unfortunately the two main events were mismatches, and both showed. Trout defeated Hernandez and Andre Dirrell defeated Marco Antonio Rubio in two non-competitive fights. If that’s going to be the matchmaking on the smaller cards, you might as well let the lower weight guys headline because I was told that in both fights, the main event was the walk-out bout.
Mayweather a winner or a loser ?: One could say that over 2,000 tickets being available for what is supposed to be Floyd Mayweather’s last fight is somewhat of a loss. What’s supposed to be the greatest fighter of this generation can’t even sell out his last fight. I’ll say that’s because of Mayweather’s last fight not being liked by the masses that were forced to pay over 100 dollars for his mega-fight with Manny Pacquiao. Of course it was a money grab for those involved but it has its repercussions. It also didn’t help that he chose Andre Berto for his opponent. But at the end of it all, Mayweather netted a 9 figure salary from his contract with Showtime, broke financial records, and is still going to receive his 30 million plus guarantee for Berto.
For some it’s about legacy and others it’s about the money. We know where ‘Money’ stands in that one.
