Floyd Mayweather has hardly ever faced anyone twice in his career. Actually only once, when he won a rematch with Jose Luis Castillo because many felt Castillo had won their first bout. Who is left for Floyd Mayweather? A fight with Manny Pacquiao seems far from being made and no one knows for sure about a fight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will take place except for the fighters and the promoters.
An option for Floyd Mayweather may be the fighter he defeated in a controversial manner in September of 2011. Victor Ortiz last via fourth round KO after overly embracing Mayweather after he threw a head butt which left a lot of questions unanswered. Ortiz was just beginning to close in on Mayweather and starting to land some shots so what would have happened as the fight wore on? We can all make predictions but no one will know without ever seeing it for themselves.
In Ortiz’ last fight he faced Josesito Lopez, who many people felt was a stay busy fight for him to face off against undefeated Mexican superstar Saul Alvarez. Ortiz dominated the fight until he retired on his stool after suffering from a broken jaw.
Many fans will have no interest in the fight given the fact that they feel Ortiz has lost all credibility as a fighter for retiring twice. His fan base has diminished and he has been given somewhat a heel role in the boxing world. In his time off recovering from surgery on his jaw, which was a legitimate injury and not an excuse, he joined the cast of Dancing with the Stars, which did not win over many new boxing fans.
So would a rematch between the two be such a bad thing? No, but he needs to prove himself once again; not that he hasn’t proven himself an entertaining fighter because that was proven a long time ago. Although he needs to shake off the rust from the time off and prove that he still belongs with the elite in the division.
