🥊 The World Boxing Council (WBC) has once again stirred the pot of controversy, crowning British welterweight Conor Benn (24-1, 14 KOs) as the Number 1 Contender for the WBC Welterweight World Title. This decision is stunningly divisive. Benn’s last fight at the 147-pound welterweight limit was a win over Chris van Heerden in April 2022, meaning he has been inactive at the division for over two years. Since then, he has fought twice at the higher 154-pound super-welterweight division, defeating Rodolfo Orozco (Sept 2023) and Peter Dobson (Feb 2024).
This ranking is a blatant example of promoter power, most notably from Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing. Benn’s history—specifically testing positive for the banned substance Clomiphene before his 2022 bout with Chris Eubank Jr.—is part of the controversy. While the WBC controversially cleared him in February 2023, citing “highly-elevated consumption of eggs” as a “reasonable explanation,” the doping issue and his ongoing legal battles with the BBBofC keep him a polarizing figure.
