Andrade | Nelson  This Saturday, at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, the highly talented Demetrius Andrade fights campaigner Willie Nelson in a final eliminator for Jermell Charlo’s WBC Super welterweight world title.   Statistics by Boxstat Demetrius has had an, unfortunately, lackluster few years despite huge expectations and obvious talent. The 28-year-old Rhode Island native was an amateur standout, winning the Golden Gloves twice and a Gold medal at the world championships, so when he turned pro, he was set for stardom. Andrade won the WBO world title in his 20th fight against Martirosyan but was only able to defend once against Brian Rose before being stripped for inactivity. Andrade faced 13 months with no fights, mainly due to complicated legal battles between promoters and management. With a stoppage win return last October against Dario Pucheta, Andrade hopes to put hiccups behind him and secure a second world title shot. The southpaw technician has impressive skills, decent power and speed with both hands. His opponent, Willie Nelson, is a very competent boxer-puncher who stands a towering 6ft3, a height rarely seen in the 154lb division. A points loss to Martirosyan, the very man who Andrade beat in 2013, gives pundits some insight into the outcome of this fight. Despite this, wins over John Jackson and Tony Harrison prove he has the ability. Also a Southpaw, this should reduce any stance advantage Andrade would usually have. An interesting All American match-up, with high stakes for both fighters who look for world honors. Andrades inactivity has left some doubt in the minds of critics, 13 months is a long

Vargas | Salido June 4th at the Stubhub centre in Carson, California. An all Mexican showdown between Orlando Salido and WBC champion Francisco Vargas. The two fighters have a reputation for thrilling encounters and pundits and fans are predicting a dramatic evening of combat. Statistics by Boxstat The champion, Francisco Vargas, has gone from strength to strength. With an impressive amateur career, the Mexico City puncher is yet to put a foot wrong as a pro, remaining undefeated in 24 contests, with 17 knockouts. Adopting the boxerfighter style of many Mexican greats, Vargas has a fan friendly style that has seen him gain notoriety and a large following of Mexican and MexicanAmericans. His best performance came in his last fight against the dangerous Japanese boxer Takashi Miura. A drama filled performance saw both men hit the deck, with Vargas seizing victory and the WBC belt with a 9th round stoppage. The contest was voted fight of the year for its high pace and theatrics. If you look up Mexican veteran in the dictionary, there will be a picture of Orlando Salido. He turned professional in 1996, and has racked up 59 fights in his career so far. The relentless, aggressive style of Salido has proved to be a lot to handle for many opponents. Including a amateur legend and current WBO world champion Vasyl Lomachenko, who Salido grinded out a SD win in 2014. Some of the questionable tactics of Orlando have come under scrutiny, as the Sonora brawler makes good use of his head and elbows. This bout is set to ignite, historically Mexican derby’s turn into wars pretty rapidly and stylistically I see this no different. The bookies have the fight close with Vargas a slight favourite, but as we have seen from Salido before, it’s not over till it’s over.
