Eric GomezGabriel Rosado and James Kirkland were on a collision course and it seemed to add value to the Bernard Hopkins-Sergey Kovalev card. For whatever reason, Kirkland pulled out that fight. While Rosado is now stepping in to face David Lemieux, Kirkland remains on the sideline.

Matchmaker of Golden Boy Promotions, Eric Gomez knows it’s part of the business even if it was a letdown the fight didn’t happen.

“It was such a good fight with Kirkland, we were excited about that fight for Gabe,” Gomez told ThaBoxingVoice.com. “It was going to be a hell of a fight. For whatever reason that fight fell through but (Rosado) he’s got a good fight coming up. But one door closed and another one opened up.”

The Canelo sweepstakes are creeping up to the level of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather and Gomez said with a good performance, Gabriel Rosado could put his name in that hat if a fight with Miguel Cotto does not come to fruition.

There a list of guys out there. Kirkland is one guy being considered,” explained Gomez. “If Gabe has a good performance there’s a good possibility we can consider Gabe for that fight. So there’s a lot of different options. Canelo’s a young guy he’s only 24 so he’s got a long career ahead of him and a lot of guys he can fight.”

Canelo’s 2013 and 2014 has proven his is willing to take on the very best in the sport. But continuously taking on the best in the sport is something that is worrisome to Gomez with one of the few cash cows in the sport.

“It’s a balancing act. You can’t just keep throwing him in there with that type of competition all the time because we do want longevity. But that’s what he wants and he takes good care of his body. But that kid is that good.
