”Yes I do!’,’ was John David Jackson’s answer, when we asked him if he thinks that he is training the best light heavyweight in the world. Jackson was of course talking about Sergey Kovalev, who just knocked out Australian Blake Caparello in two rounds.
The trainer reflected on the fight. He told Thaboxingvoice.com that Caparello stepped on Kovalev’s foot right before the knockdown and that he liked what he saw from his fighter after the fluke knockdown. Jackson told us, ”When he got up, he was calm. I liked that. After the first round, I told him to go to the body. He did and you saw the result.”
The looming bout with Bernhard Hopkins didn’t influence this fight or training camp for this fight, according to Jackson. ”We stayed focussed on Blake Caparello. We never talked about Hopkins.”
Now that Kovalev has taken care of Caparello, Jackson could finally talk about the upcoming fight.
“We gotta be smart and make him work”, the trainer explained. He quickly added, “And we gotta work the body!”
