On October 23rd 1999, long before he would eventually go on to become one of boxings best trainers, over a decade before he would go on to win the prestigious trainer of the year award in 2012, and far before he’d eventually head up a stable of elite fighters including the likes of Mikey Garcia, Nonito Donaire, Brandon Rios and Marcos Maidana, Robert Garcia was the undefeated reigning IBF super featherweight champion.

Garcia, coming off two successful title defenses against then undefeated Ramon Ledon and former world champion John John Molina., He fought a then still largely unproven 22 year old, 6 foot tall, super featherweight by the name of Diego Corrales. The fight was full of excitement from the opening bell as Robert did very well early on but would go on to be outclassed down the stretch resulting in a 7th round TKO loss.

Ironically, it was speculated at the time by some including the HBO commentary team that part of the reason Garcia lost the fight was because he was looking ahead to a big money unification fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. The man who would later, in spectacular fashion become the first to ever defeat Corrales.

Fast forward back to present day at the Mayweather vs Maidana 2: Mayhem round table press conference., where Floyd addresses Robert Garcia’s comments at an earlier press conference regarding Floyd’s fighting style and his loss to Diego Corrales where he referred to Corrales as being a “Warrior” he was proud to have lost to. As well as acknowledging the influence of the many great champions of the past who have paved the way for him. Check it out!
