“To my fellow boxing fans, I write in the hopes that together we can protect the sport of boxing. With each passing day, it looks more and more likely that the circus known as Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor will be coming to town in the near future. As undercard fights start to take form, athletic commissions give their blessings in exchange for millions of dollars, and the fighters start counting even more cash, one group will eventually be left to make sure this farce doesn’t occur—we, the fans, who are the lifeblood of our sport.” – Oscar De La Hoya prior to Mayweather – McGregor being confirmed.

Four years ago we got the biggest fight possible between boxing and MMA and it was a spectacle and a circus all in one. Fans were entertained by the antics before, during, and after the fight but there were many that did not agree with it and its PPV price. Oscar De La Hoya was one of those fighters. That quote at the top there was De La Hoya begging boxing fans not to purchase the event as it was seen as an embarrassment to boxing. The times have since changed.

With Mayweather doing more exhibitions against nonboxers and the Paul brothers (Jake and Logan) invading boxing (NWO style just without the legitimacy) everyone sees there is money to be made and there are several that would love a taste.

In March of 2021, De LA Hoya announced his comeback to the sport. He said he wanted all of the top names and was not going to jump into an easy fight for his return. We (the fans) were left wondering who would it be? De La Hoya stated he wanted to fight GGG but that will not happen. Would he go for a B-level fighter looking to get a payday and possibly send De La Hoya into retirement for good? That’s not going to happen…at least for now.

De La Hoya wants to fight a UFC fighter but not just any UFC fighter. A legend in the sport…who so happens to be retired. Georges St-Pierre is still technically under contract with the UFC and that contract is frozen due to GSP and UFC not being able to come to terms on a return bout. In turn, Dana White has at this point killed any possibility of GSP stepping into the boxing ring against De La Hoya which infuriated Oscar.

“This fuck nut kept Georges St-Pierre from making the biggest payday with me,” stated De La Hoya on Instagram.

That does not mean that De La Hoya has given up hope as he has offered an incentive to White to allow the fight to happen.

“GSP confirmed to me he is ready. Our deal is there. It is only Dana White holding this up. I will add $250k from my purse for that fight towards Ryan Kavanaugh’s donation towards a charity of Dana’s choice. Let GSP Fight!”
