Are We Really Getting the Floyd Mayweather-Amir Khan Fight?

It seems harsh to be so critical from the start, but the question needs to be asked, are we really getting the Floyd Mayweather-Amir Khan fight? A year ago, it would have been reasonable, but this was before Khan was knocked out by Danny Garcia and never looked good again. In his comeback fight, he fought a well undersized Carlos Molina who simply did not have anything for Khan. In his last outing got dropped by Julio Diaz in a fight where he struggled to stay on his feet.

Yet that does not stop all signs from pointing to Amir Khan as the next man in line for Mayweather.  BoxRec.com is listing him as the next opponent. Most notably, on Monday night Khan entered the arena of “Golden Boy Live” on Fox Sports 1 in Redwood City, California during the Paul Mendez-Louis Rose match. Khan, who was being filmed by his own promotional team worked as a color commentary for some of the fight and then was hounded by the media for questions afterwards. His answers were quick and the kind you could imagine.

“[Khan] is in great shape….training hard…waiting to get a fight.” It was nothing new and more or less the same ol’ same ol’, but looking at Amir Khan who did a media workout in San Francisco last week which was filmed by Mario Cabera Jr. of BeatTheCount.com, you can tell Khan is in the best shape of his career. Khan, who has now relocated to the SF Bay Area for his training camps now appears to be possibly in line for the biggest fight of his career and his demeanor seems that of a man who is about to get paid as he calmly answered questions with ease and came in and out of the venue keeping his name in the air prior to a big announcement.

What does this mean for the fans though? Last time Mayweather fought a fighter the fans deemed unworthy they responded with their pocketbooks, as the Robert Guerrero fight did not gross, according to Forbes Magazine, what it would have taken to recoup the cost of promoting the fight. The thinking would be that Khan is a star overseas and that much like how Canelo Alvarez brought in foreign PPVs from Mexico, maybe Khan would bring in the UK and European crowd to buy the fight abroad. The question is, do people still believe in Khan? You cannot doubt the heart of Khan, but the sheer fact is he does not take a punch well and that Mayweather is one of the most accurate punchers ever should give someone pause. Even though people do not think of Mayweather as having power, he hits hard enough to keep people honest and it seems as though it would be tough for Khan to stomach a chance to stay on the outside for 12 rounds without getting chin checked.

What do you think of this match up and how do you feel about it? Looking at the other match ups out there are there any better ones? Danny Garcia is unproven at 147 and needs, at the very least, one fight to get used to the weight. Keith Thurman seems a bit too green as well. Erisandy Lara doesn’t draw the same attention and Manny Pacquiao just doesn’t seem possible anymore.  Oh, and then there is Adrien Broner, who is the “x factor” in all of this and could very well fight Floyd sooner rather than later based simply off need and necessity. As quick as we are too judge Floyd, we also have to remember he simply makes a lot of fighters look average. Is this simply a weak division or is Floyd really that good?
