Donaire was knocked down for the first time, and he suffered the first knockout loss of his career. While most fighters would be stressed over that type of loss Donaire saw the loss as a blessing and as a wake up call.

“God saved me last night,” said Donaire via social media. “I would have died by the sword last night. I would have kept getting up and if I stayed in that fight until the 12th [and] I could have gotten brain damage. Walters was just too big for me. If I got past Walters I would have fought with [Orlando] Salido at 130lbs and really gotten hurt.”

Donaire has been accused of not dedicating himself to training throughout the past year but claims to have trained even more for his fight with Walters. The loss itself seems to have served as a wake-up call to Donaire and he realizes that he is not invincible.
