Media, management, and both fighters’ camps were all in Brooklyn to discuss the upcoming fight, Bernard Hopkins vs. Tavoris Cloud and to celebrate Bernard’s birthday. Hopkins turned 48 yesterday and we all sang and celebrated with him.

First out of Tavoris Cloud’s camp to speak was Don King stating the obvious, that Bernard is one of the greatest fighters of all time. Don King continued, “Bernard is stubborn and resistant and something has got to give and it will on March 9th.” Don and Bernard had quite a bit back and forth banter ending with Don telling everyone that, “Bernard you need to enjoy your day because after March 9th the celebration will be your lasting promotional legacy as we send you into retirement!”

Tavoris then came to the podium He came with a serious demeanor, which was totally the opposite of Bernard and even Bernard himself said, “Tavoris doesn’t talk he comes to fight.” Tavoris agreed with that statement.

He started by saying, “I want to thank Bernard Hopkins for calling me out for this fight!” Cloud went on to explain how ready he was to fight. “On March 9th,” said Cloud, “I will be in great shape. I am going to throw more punches and I am definitely going to win this fight by throwing them.” Cloud never yelled as he pointed out Hopkins must do and explained, “I am in this game for the experience.” He gave his opinion of how he felt stating that, “Don got into Bernard’s head and I think he won the war of words.”

His manager Jay Prince also was short with words and direct to the point. “We are very excited for this opportunity. Coming here to the Barclay this year, this is the fight you want to see.” He went on to explain about Clouds readiness for the fight and then ended with, “It’s going to be war!”

Naazim Richardson who is Hopkins Trainer brought some great points on why the excitement in Bernard regarding Don King. “They have a past,” and he explained it. “I was on tour with Bernard and Don King. You are only seeing a preview today of what they can say. If anybody knows anything about boxing on this level, you know Bernard Hopkins!”

Naazim confirmed Bernard is ready at 48 years young to take on Tavoris Cloud but he acknowledged he knows Cloud and that he is focused and dangerous. His exact words were, “I know what he capable of doing and he is going to be up to fighting a legend.”

As in all press conferences there was trash talking back and forth with the intent of throwing your opponent off but there was more of a personal tone here. There is a past between King and Hopkins and Cloud is kind of the middle man. I think we are up for a very exciting fight and as David Itskowitch the COO of Golden Boy said “I would have let Bernard and Don keep talking, but we would have been here for days!”

The beautiful cake was brought in to celebrate Hopkins birthday. It was a cheese cake from Junior’s which is right in downtown Brooklyn. They are famous for their cheese cake and Bernard then cut his cake and gave Don the first slice telling him. “Don you are going to need the wishes and luck more than me!”
