As most fight fans already know, Robert Guerrero (31-2-1 18KO’s) will make his long awaited return to the ring on June 21st. He will be facing Yoshihiro Kamegai (24-1-1 21KO’s) from Japan and the bout will be televised live on Showtime.
When this fight was first announced, I was a bit disappointed to learn that Guerrero will be making his return against a fighter who is a relatively unknown to most American fight fans. However, after doing some research on the Kamegai and eventually seeing some of his past fights, my view and opinion on this match-up has changed and I believe that Kamegai is a formidable opponent for Guerrero’s comeback fight. Yoshihiro Kamegai stands at nearly 5’10 in height and possesses decent size for the welterweight division. He is a very accurate puncher and places his shots extremely well. This has served him well as he’s registered 21 KO’s in 26 fights leaving him with a KO percentage of over 80%! However, he stands a little to straight up for my liking.
Kamegai is also an entertaining fighter; he prefers to stand in front of his opponents and has an offensive mindset.
Robert Guerrero on the other hand is a multi weight world champion and a 34 fight veteran. Guerrero is mentally tuff and always determined to win. He has average punching power and is certainly not the fastest guy. He possesses great physical strength and is extremely strong for a welterweight. He stands at 5’8 and has a 70 inch reach. His best work has been done at 126lbs despite winning paper titles in other divisions.
Guererro’s best wins have come against Martin Honorio, Jason Litzau, Joel Casamayor, Michael Katsidis, and Andre Berto. Guerrero clearly has the edge in experience going into this fight. He knows what it’s like to be in the ring with the best and has been a world titlist before. I expect this fight to be an entertaining one because both of these fighters prefer to fight instead of box and are offensive minded.
