Juan Manuel Marquez v Juan DiazIgnacio “Nacho” Beristain, the long-time trainer of four-division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez, is closing the curtain on the feasibility of his future Hall of Famer squaring off the ring again with either Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The 41-year-old Mexican superstar was last seen in the ring in May 2014 when he dominated Mike Alvarado to claim the vacant WBO International welterweight title.

Despite being ranked No. 2 in the WBO rankings behind Timothy Bradley and Manny Pacquiao, Marquez has been unable to return to the ring due to a serious knee injury suffered in the fight against Alvarado.
Beristain revealed in an interview with FightHype.com that Marquez will fight once more before retiring from the sport for good.

“Juan Manuel Marquez is getting ready and preparing himself to fight one more time, and then say good-bye to boxing.”

The 75-year-old trainer added that he doesn’t want to see Marquez fight with either Pacquiao or Mayweather. After a brief retirement, Mayweather returned in September 2009 and dominated Marquez, dropping him in the second round.

On the other foot, Marquez fought Pacquiao four times, with the first three fights ending in inconclusiveness. However, their clash in December 2012 ended in the sixth-round when Marquez landed a perfectly timed counter right hand that knocked the eight-division world champion Pacquiao out cold.

“He cannot wait for any winners. History has been closed. He has nothing to prove,” Beristain asserted.

Marquez’s strength and conditioning coach Angel Heredia, though, says otherwise. Although Marquez has repeatedly said he would never give Pacquiao a rematch, Heredia was asked if he thought Marquez would make an exception if Pacquiao were to beat Mayweather in May.

“Probably so. I think so,” Heredia said. “If they fought today a lot of people are going to say ‘I’m not going to buy the fifth fight’ yet they are all going to watch it. It’s a tremendous fight, and everyone would want to see it.”
