Fresh off the biggest win of his career — a 1st round TKO of Peter Quillin in the “Battle of Brooklyn” at the Barclay center on Saturday — Danny Jacobs and his team have opened the door to many options in the middleweight division. He can fight the winner of Andy Lee Vs Billy Joe Saunders, Chris Eubank (who is Jacobs’ manager) and he can eventually get the megafight with Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin – the long shot being a fight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. No one can question the marketing power of a rematch with Quillin, but that would be Jacobs’ least enticing choice of the previously mentioned.
Jacobs’ trainer Andre Rozier talked with Nestor Gibbs about the future of “The Miracle Man” now that he has conquered his toughest test to date. Rozier, when asked about a fight with GGG for Jacobs despite the politics making it seemingly improbable, said, “Abel Sanchez said in the past that my fighter was too green to effectively perform against his fighter. I think now he knows Danny has the goods to go in there and be victorious against Gennady Golovkin.” Rozier continued by saying, “He (Danny Jacobs) can punch, he’s thinking, he’s moving, he’s aware and he’s enough firepower to keep Gennady very, very comfortably cautious.”
Now, few expect a fight between Jacobs and Golovkin to happen right away, so its only right to discuss other fights that can be made in the meantime, especially a shot at another title with the winner of Andy lee vs Saunders.
Rozier told TBV what he thought about that possibility saying, “I think that would be a great bout, I think it would be a fantastic build up for a fantastic unification with Danny and Gennady with both of them coming to the table with equal power in their pockets” He proceeded saying, “let’s come with even money and let’s lay it down on the line and take full control of it, let both athletes make 3-5 million a piece and ride off into the sunset.
The sky is the limit for Danny Jacobs with this current win. He has many options on the table and now he has the power to control the characteristics of the match ups he chooses. Whether he fights his mandatory or he fights the winner of Lee vs Saunders, the truth is if he wins all roads lead to a mega fight with Gennady Golovkin, and I hope to see more than one round of action to determine if Danny Jacobs is truly ready for that kind of test. Look out for Danny Jacobs and his team in the future as he is now the top dog at middleweight- you know, not counting Golovkin.
