Banks-Mitchell II: Rematch or Revenge?

When Johnathon Banks signed on to fight Seth Mitchell last year everyone thought he was going to lose. I however thought differently. Seth Mitchell is a big strong fighter, but the skills and experience gave the edge too Banks. Not to mention Mitchell has been rocked before and has been thought of as chinny, at least in this writer’s eyes. February 16th, when the two meet again will we see a rerun of the last fight or something different? I’ll get to my personal prediction in a minute.

Seth Mitchell seemed to understand his flaws from the first fight stating, “My balance and my distance were terrible in that fight. And I got a little overzealous.” Mitchell is correct, he runs in like a wrecking ball and it makes him an easy target. If Mitchell wants to win this time around he will have to use other angles and faints to open Banks up. Mitchell continued, letting people know his desire for a rematch. “When I went back in the dressing room after the fight, when I talked to Al Haymon I asked him two questions. I asked him how much did this set me back and when can I get a rematch.”

Banks on the other hand voiced his displeasure with the rematch clause saying “I would have wanted to move on to something different, but you’ve got to go with what the paper, what’s in black and white.” Johnathon Banks is a very humble fighter so when he was asked if he expects the same result this time around, we didn’t hear an exact response. “In my opinion I look forward to a victory. I don’t know how. I didn’t know how the first one was going to come and I don’t know how the second one is going to come, but I’m confident about Johnathon and do believe I’ll be victorious.” Banks does need to change some things. One, be more mobile and two, try to counter more. Banks may not want to make a prediction but I sure will.

Mitchell is a come forward style that throws bomb after bomb. He might land a few and even hurt Banks but as they say history repeats itself. I see Banks surviving the early storm from Mitchell and coming back to stop him for another KO victory in under 5 rounds. I can’t see Mitchell winning a decision, so unless Banks gets caught “Pacquiao style”, I expect a repeat of the first fight.

For the fans of Johnathon Banks, he is having a public workout as he prepares himself for the rematch with Seth Mitchell. It’s on January 24th at 2:00pm just head down to Bad Boy Gym at 30371 Woodward avenue, Royal Oaks, Michigan 48703 and check it out. Tell them ‘Tha Boxing Voice’ sent you.
