Barrera-Watkins Match-up Highlights Undercard Sept. 20 at Foxwoods |
Mashantucket, CT:Before NBC Fight Night broadcasts live from Foxwoods Resort Casino on Saturday afternoon, the live audience will be treated to a tour de force undercard that features five undefeated fighters, five local fighters, one Cuban fighter, one rematch and one professional debut in 30 rounds of non-stop action. The special afternoon edition of Fight Night features two regional championship bouts. In the co-feature, undefeated lightweight Karl “Dynamite” Dargan (16-0, 8 KOs) of Philadelphia, PA will take on Angino “The Nightmare” Perez (16-5, 14 KOs) for the Junior NABF Lightweight Title and Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu (16-1, 11 KOs) looks to defend his NABF Cruiserweight title in the main event against Garrett “The Ultimate Warrior” Wilson (13-7-1, 7 KOs).
Undefeated Cuban light heavyweight sensation Sullivan Barrera (12-0, 7 KOs) will face New York native Eric Watkins (10-7-1, 5 KOs) for eight rounds of action. This will be Barrera’s third fight in 2014. The 32-year old defeated Lee Campbell, who was undefeated at the time, in a six round unanimous decision at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in his last fight. Earlier this year, he knocked out Larry Pryor at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia. The fight is scheduled for eight rounds, which would be the longest of Barrera’s career (his last four fights have all gone six rounds). Watkins, 28, is looking to snap a three-fight losing streak. The West Virginia native lost a split decision to Bobby Thomas, Jr. (92-97, 92-97, 95-94) in his last fight. This will be the first fight in Connecticut for both fighters.
The first of two Connecticut against Massachusetts match-ups is the rematch between Chip Perez (10-3-1, 3 KOs) of East Hartford, CT and Agustine Mauras (6-0-2, 3 KO’s) of Lawrence, MA in a six round lightweight battle. The two met earlier this year on Mauras’ turf where the six-round fight ended in a draw (all three judges scored the bout 57-57). Now the two will meet again, this time on Perez’s stomping ground for another six rounds. Perez’s previous two fights before the draw were also on Fight Night undercards, losing to Jason Sosa and Michael Brooks at Mohegan Sun. Mauras, 23, is undefeated and four years younger than Perez, 27, so a win in hostile territory could bring a big ego boast to the up-and-comer.
In the other Connecticut vs. Massachusetts match-up, middleweights Anthony Everett (0-1) of Dorchester, MA and David Wilson (3-0) of New Haven, CT square off for four rounds. Everett was stopped earlier this year in his professional debut against Andy Gonzales in the second round. The southpaw, Wilson, has three four-round unanimous decision victories since making his professional debut last year. Most recently, he defeated Devison Riberio by wide decision in May of this year.
Another local fighter, Charles Foster (5-0, 22 KOs) of New Haven, CT, will face Robert Jackson (0-1) of Hampton, VA in a four-round super middleweight match-up. Foster, 24, has not fought since October of last year when he defeated Greg Hackett in a four-round unanimous decision. Jackson has not fought since 2012 when he made his professional debut against Tylon Burris and was stopped in the second round.
In a battle of the Hudson, Queens, NY native Tyrell White (0-1) will take on Piotr Apostol of Atlantic City, NJ in his professional debut for four rounds of lightweight action. White made his professional debut earlier this month with a four-round unanimous decision loss to Usiel Hernandez.
Main Events CEO Kathy Duva said, “This undercard has everything I could ask for: prospects, undefeated fighters, local fighters and a rematch of a great action fight. The fans in attendance are in for a real treat. And, given the early start time, everyone will have time to enjoy the show then spend a fantastic night at Foxwoods!” |
