Leading up to Saturday’s fight between Erislandy Lara and Brian Castaño I knew nothing about the Argentinean fighter. Hell, to be honest I’ve been in and out of writing for the last year that a lot of the fresher faces are new to me. I’ve known Lara and how he fights and seeing him in a comeback fight since his loss to Jarrett Hurd I wanted to see what the Cuban fighter had left and how he was going to bounce back.

When I saw that Castaño was the opponent my immediate reaction was who? Then I looked at his record and saw he held a regular version of a title but the lack of fights as a professional concerned me. One thing was for sure was that I had to see this fight.

I figured of the crafty veteran Lara was going to get the young champion out of there before twelve rounds it would happen early on the fight. Would the fight go into the championship rounds then Lara would secure a late stoppage or a decision victory but things did not turn out that way.

Castaño took the fight to Lara and handled his punches well. Yes he got a draw but to be the away fighter that is a victory all in it’s own. The experience that he gained will definitely serve him well in other matchups in the division that has had many of the same fighters in front of the pack for years now. Castaño seems to be the type of fighter that the division needs for more matchups with a fresher face and excitement especially with his fighting style which reminds me of Brandon Rios at lightweight just with a little bit more defense.
