This past Saturday I was given the opportunity to see a tremendous amateur standout perform in the ring. Alex Torres-Rynn (@AztecadeOro101) was originally born in Mexico City but his family immigrated to Canada to look for work when he was only 6 years old. Speaking of his family, Rynn is not really a last name that you would find or expect from someone that comes from a Latin American country but there is an explanation for that. Alex’s stepfather who was an American met his mother while Alex was little and as a Latin tradition Alex was given both last names.
Alex is currently 27 years old and resides in Calgary, Alberta Canada. He started boxing late at night at the age of 19 years old and has accumulated a record of 85-15 and is a 4 time Canadian champion. Alex is currently in the running to join the 2016 Canadian Olympic team which is a dream of his. So many amateurs have decided with the new changes in Olympic boxing to no longer have headgear that they should just turn pro and get paid for taking the risks that they are taking but not Alex. “Once your an Olympian no one can ever take that away from you. Anyone can turn pro,” said Torres-Rynn. “I’m not rushing into anything especially with the way so many fighters have been taken advantage of in the pro game. I’ve got to do it right”
It’s in Torres-Rynn’s plans to turn professional after the Olympics, should he make the team but if he does not then he will go pro and focus on fighting world level opponents and not just Canadian opponents. “I think with my experience I will be able to successfully make the ascension unto the world level quite fast.” With his style that is very fan pleasing it should be an smooth transition for the Mexican born fighter who has great speed and can box, brawl and counter very well.
In good spirits Torres-Rynn gave some words of encouragement to those aspiring to lace up the gloves and to his fans.
“Don’t ever give up on your dreams, I’m here, 100% committed to the sweet science they call boxing and you will see the very best from me leading up to 2016.”
