Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is currently enjoying the greatest victory of his career against Austin “No Doubt” Trout but already has the date in mind for his next fight. Alvarez has September 14th in mind for his next fight, and there are two opponents that seem the most realistic for him to face.
Of course Floyd “Money” Mayweather is at the top of his list. Canelo has been chasing him for quite some time, but no one knows for sure if the fight will materialize.
But if the Mayweather fight does not happen, Miguel Cotto would be a huge fight for Canelo and for boxing fans. Many times Cotto has been called washed up but ends up proving that he is not finished whether he wins or loses a fight. Does Cotto deserve the shot at Alvarez? Yes. He has failed to show that he cannot put up a fight against top competition. There was talk last year about Alvarez facing Cotto should Cotto have won against Austin Trout. When Trout upset Cotto, fans wanted to see Alvarez face Trout but doubted that it would ever happen, and we saw what happened.
If Alvarez decides to face Cotto in September, he should not be knocked for taking the fight. The fight would do huge numbers and no matter where it is staged, would more than likely sell out the arena. It is guaranteed to be all action and a beautiful technical fight not to mention adding another chapter to the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry and should Cotto win the match, it could set up a huge rematch or a trilogy.
