Saul Canelo Alvarez Gennady GolovkinSince dethroning Miguel Cotto last November there is only one fight that boxing fans want to see Saul “Canelo” Alvarez take and that is a fight to unify all major titles in the middleweight division in a super fight against Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Negotiations seemed to be complicated on both ends but a resolution came to that both fighters would be allowed a voluntary title defense before finally facing each other later this year.
Canelo has gone on record that if the fight between he and Golovkin happens this year it will have to happen at 155 pounds. That statement stone has brought about a tremendous amount of criticism towards Canelo due to the titles being middleweight  (160 pound) titles. Among those to criticize Canelo’s decision is none other than Golovkin himself who has stated that the titles are not for 155 pounds. The criticism does not seem to affect Canelo though.
“They will always be picky. That’s why it interests me less,” stated Canelo to notifight.com .
Canelo seems to have taken the Floyd Mayweather route to the criticism. When Mayweather was often criticized about not fighting Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather stated that no matter what happens he will still receive criticism.
“I have nothing to tell [the critics]. I’m always going to be criticized. I have nothing to tell them. Even if I beat Golovkin, they will look for more excuses to continue criticizing me. That’s why right now I [am just going to] do my work.”
While Canelo may be right about the criticism he should still follow through with the fight but at 160 pounds. It would leave no room for excuses or criticism no matter the outcome. He has wanted to give the fans the fights they want to see in the past and he has given Erislandy Lara the fight he wanted to prove a point. Why not do the same in this case?
