When the separation of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez from Golden Boy and DAZN was announced it sent shockwaves through the boxing world. Speculation on who would face Canelo next was broad but for a brief period of time it seemed as if Caleb Plant was the front-runner but that changed quickly.
Focus moved from Plant to Callum Smith which is a relief to fans that want to see great fights between top fighters. Smith has held titles in the super middleweight division since 2018 and was the victor of the World Boxing Super Series super-middleweight tournament that same year.
Both fighters have not fought in a year (partially due to Covid) but the fight should produce fireworks. It’s been a long wait but will be worth it according to Canelo.
“We’re more ready than ever,” stated Canelo via Facebook. “I’ll be returning to the ring this upcoming December 19th to face Callum Smith. The wait has been long but I promise it will be worth it.”
The fight will air on DAZN but has yet to land a specific location.
