It was very clear from the first minute of the fight that Jermall Charlo was going to be a nightmare for Cornelius Bundrage in the scheduled 12-round bout for the IBF super-middleweight championship in Mashantucket, Connecticut.
Charlo put on the most impressive performance of his young career. Momentarily after the opening bell rang, the problems that Charlo posed for Bundrage were obvious. He held a distinct height and reach advantage and after working his jab for the first minute of the fight, Charlo landed a chopping right to the head of K-9 and sent him to the canvas for the first of his three trips to the mat.
As the second round began an extremely confident Charlo dropped Bundrage again this time with a short left hook. Bundrage, the warrior that he is, rose to his feet again to beat the count, but clearly was on borrowed time.
Charlo came out strong to start the third round and was dominating Bundrage throughout the round. With 35 seconds left in the round Charlo hammered K-9 with an overhand right which sent him sprawling to the canvas at which point referee Johnny Callas mercifully halted the mismatch.
“I’ve finally made it to championship status. To be classified as a world champion. It’s history,” said Charlo.
What kind of champion Charlo go down in history as?
Only time will tell, but the future looks bright for the young, hungry lion.
