Chavez Jr.Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. had been out of the ring since last March when he defeated Bryan Vera in what was the most watched fight on a premium network television. Since then, he’s had two fights with Gennady Golovkin and Carl Froch not materialize and an ongoing dispute with his promoter Bob Arum and Top Rank. Chavez Jr. has a date with Andrzej Fonfora on April 18th. While he contends, he’s still a free agent. He says he’s happy to be back in the ring.

“I’m very happy and emotional,” Chavez told Benardo Osuna of ESPN Deportes. “It’s great to have a date and to have a fight. I love to box. So it was a little depressing to not be in the ring. So I’m happy all the issues have been worked out. We’re going to try and 3 or 4 fights to make up for the time we lost.”

Chavez is moving up in weight and will likely have a catch weight of 173 for this fight. However, he feels Fonfora is a challenge for him.

Fonfora is a good opponent because he beat Glen Jonson, he beat Gabriel Campillo, and he knocked down Adonis Stevenson,” stated Chavez. “He’s a strong fighter at 175. They say I gain a lot of weight between fights. But he’s going to weigh more than me. I think at 175 you’ll see my best abilities. He’s not easy, and it’s a weight class I never fought in.”

Chavez has aligned himself with power advisor Al Haymon. Al Haymon is bringing boxing to different networks throughout the U.S., and more importantly NBC. Chavez feels that’s great for boxing.

“I like regular networJulio-Cesar-Chavez-Jr-vs-GGG-Golovkink TV over premium networks. I think it’s better for the fans. It’s better for boxing with more networks and more dates, more work for boxers,” explained Chavez.

But the big elephant in the room is a claim by Top Rank that Chavez still owes them one fight. When the Fonfora fight was announced, Bob Arum told BoxingScene.com that, “We’ll see him in court.”

Chavez isn’t worried and says there’s nothing Arum can do to stop the fight.

“My lawyers tell me that the fight can’t be stopped, and it’s already done. Bob Arum can’t stop it. I’m happy where I’m at. He can say whatever he wants like he has for Mayweather-Pacquiao, that we have a contract. But in reality contracts are signed for this fight, and the fight will happen.”
