chavez versus vera 2As he nears his April 18th date against Andrzej Fonfara(26-3, 15KO’s), Julio Cesar Chavez Jr(48-1, 32KO’s) seemed more focused on the ageless light-heavyweight Bernard Hopkins when he spoke to Fighthype.com.

Hopkins has apparently been throwing some verbal barbs in Chavez Jr’s direction, to which the young Mexican used his camera time to throw straight back.

“Hopkins talked trash about me. When he fought with Chad Dawson, I don’t think he have an injury. D’you see the fight? I think he’s a good actor you know. Maybe the fight happen, people can see this fight. I’d like to fight this guy, he’s a great fighter; he’s a legend. I have respect like a fighter, but I tell the truth; he fought Chad Dawson, he don’t have an injury, he’s a good actor.”

Reaching back three years to Hopkins’s first fight with Chad Dawson -where Hopkins withdrew from the contest with complaints of a shoulder injury having been hoisted up, and body slammed onto the canvas to find some kind of criticism is just that, reaching.

Hopkins represents a lucrative encounter for Chavez Jr even at fifty years of age, and it looks as though the Clown Prince of Mexican boxing is trying to stir the pot for another big-money fight after his match with Carl Froch was taken away. That is purely speculation though.

Given Chavez Jr. style this match up could make for an interesting fight. If Chavez could apply his consistent pressure he could possibly force Hopkins to fight a higher paced fight then that of which he is accustomed to. Chavez Jr. is working with Joe Goossen now let’s give Goossen a chance to see if he can bring a more motivated Chavez to the ring on fight night.
