Seems like we’ve been down this road before when it comes to Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez, a super fight between Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez being negotiated with the date to be determined, and the venue likely New York, Dallas, or Las Vegas.
So here we go again.
According to ESPN Deportes, negotiations have been ongoing between Golden Boy Promotions and Roc Nation Sports for a showdown between Puerto Rico’s biggest boxing star Miguel Cotto and Mexico’s biggest boxing star in Canelo Alvarez.
The bout will likely be an HBO Pay-Per-View. The dates both sides are looking at as reported by ESPN Deportes are either November 21st or November 28th. The location according to the report will be between New York, Texas, and Las Vegas.
Should the bout be in New York, the likely landing spot would likely be Madison Square Garden, an arena that is full of boxing lore. The arena has been a home away from home of sorts for Cotto as he has defeated the likes of Sergio Martinez, Antonio Margarito, Shane Mosley, Zab Judah, and Joshua Clottey in that arena where he has sold the most tickets of any boxer this era.
Although Cotto’s last fight was in the new Barclays Center when he stopped Daniel Geale in 4 rounds, it seems like a long shot according to some sources.
Should the bout happen in Texas, the front runner is Dallas Cowboys AT&T Stadium, a venue can hold up to 100,000 fans.
Cowboy’s owner Jerry Jones is rumored to have high interest in the bout. The Cowboys are away on the weekend of the 21st and play a home game on Thanksgiving Thursday the weekend of November 28th, so both options are possible.
Canelo’s last bout was in Houston, Texas, where he knocked out James Kirkland in three rounds in front of 35,000 fans at Minute Maid Park.
The dark horse is Las Vegas and the casinos because of the site fee they can provide to promoters. But rumor has it that Oscar De La Hoya and MGM officials have a shaky relationship at the moment.
This is a first of many rumor articles likely to come, let’s just hope the fight happens this time around.
