There were six fights on the Miguel Cotto-Daniel Geale undercard. Most of the fights were younger fighters within the 1st three or so fights into their professional career. The winners included Shawn Simpson, Angel Luna, Dustin Fleischer, Junior Younan, Zhamg Zhilei, and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. There was a light sprinkle of people in the crowd which preceded the small concert put on by Roc Nation and performer Big Sean, which was all before what everyone was here for, Miguel Cotto vs Daniel Geale for the WBC Middleweight Belt.
In the 1st bout of the fight, Shawn Simpson had his debut fight and defeated Damon Simon (0-1) with a 4th round stoppage. Simpson controlled the fight and had won the 1st three rounds on the cards of all three judges. It was an easy win for the junior featherweight from Chicago, Illinois. He looked good and hopefully he can progress from this and be on future cards.
In the 2nd fight of the night, Angel Luna (10-1-1) pulled off the slight upset over Jose Lopez (15-0-1 with 11 KOs). The local product from New York, New York stopped the fan favorite from Puerto Rico as he won a six round decision. Luna was much the aggressor most of the fight and won by unanimous decision over the favorite Lopez.
In the 3rd fight of the evening, Dustin Fleischer won his 2nd straight fight as he took out Kareem Miller (1-1 with 1 KO). The welterweight from Monmouth Beach, NJ won by 1st round knockout and was stopped just over one minute into the fight. Fleischer, also known as The White Tiger, will now hope to continue his winning ways in the future after starting his career with two stoppages.
In the 4th bout of the evening, Junior Younan (6-0 with 5 KOs) dominated Mike Sawyer (6-3 with 4 KOs) with a 2nd round stoppage as he pounded the 38-year-old Mike Sawyer for one and half rounds. The fight wasn’t close and it was very close to being stopped in round one. It was a bit of a sloppy fight as Younan threw 90% left hooks, but eventually the ref stopped it, mercilessly.
In the 5th fight of the night, heavyweight Zhang Zhilei stepped into the ring to try to improve on his undefeated 3-0 with 2 KOs record against Glen Thomas (1-3). The big man nicknamed “Big Bang” banged his opponent for four rounds as he was able to cruise to an easy unanimous decision in his four round bout. It was just another in a long list of fights tonight to showcase a fighter from early in his pro career.
In the last fight before the Main Event of the night, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr (24-4-1 with 19 KOs) squared off against Fernando Vargas (28-9-2 with 20 KOs). In what was a battle of Puerto Rico vs Mexico, this turned into the fight that got the most boos, as the crowd showed their dissatisfaction of the slow moving bout. When it was all over Fernando Vargas was able to get the slight upset as he defeated Wilfredo Vazquez Jr by unanimous decision 79-73, 78-74, and 77-75.
The undercard was very underwhelming and the crowd didn’t really take to it, which was indicated by the half-filled crowd at 10 o clock. However, after the undercard was done, the crowd start to fill the seats a little bit more and they were all treated to a 20 min or so concert from performing artist Big Sean right before the Main Event of Miguel Cotto vs Daniel Geale, which was really the only reason people were here.
