Joshua-Clottey5(1)Boxing’s newest savior Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is all set for action. Alvarez will face former welterweight titleholder Joshua Clottey on Dec. 6 on HBO at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya informed RingTV.com on Tuesday.

After the big announcement of Canelo’s return to boxing’s biggest stage the premier network of HBO. We expected something a bit more mouth watering then Joshua Clottey. For one split second I thought maybe just maybe we would get that when James Kirkland pulled out of the Gabriel Rosado fight a $270,000  pay day. He was immediately in the running with Clottey for a shot at Canelo in our eyes, but I should be fair and say that Kirkland has been finding a lot of reasons not to do his job as a fighter lately.

So in steps Clottey, the thing is none of us have forgotten the last time the causal fan viewed Clottey on televison was back in 2010 for a PPV match-up with Manny Pacquiao. Clottey’s performance was horrible. He kept his usual high guard with very little if  any punch being thrown by him.

It’s left us with a sour taste and Clottey just won’t do it for the fight fans right? Well the thing is this playing I am playing devil’s advocate here. After that Pacquiao fight, Clottey went on a two year hiatus but has since been able to get off three wins, the most notable of which came this past April when Clottey decisioned Anthony Mundine in a fight he showed he can be more then a just a human punching bag because he dropped Mundine 6 times.

Given Canelo’s schedule in the past two years where we’ve seen him face the likes of Austin Trout, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Alfredo Angulo, and most recently Erislandy Lara someone that nobody was jumping up to step in the ring with. So I ask if we choose to believe what we hear that Canelo’s next two fights are going to be on HBO PPV and if we choose to further believe his next fight is with the Lineal Middleweight Champion Miguel Cotto then I guess the interim Clottey fight isn’t that bad.

The good news is that this fight will be televised on regular HBO instead of PPV, which is actually a relief to see a pay per view star not trying to milk his fans for an extra $75. So, do you accept this fight?  Let us know in the comment section below.
