Amidst the Floyd Mayweather-Andre Berto rumors on CBS, Amir Khan thinks he’s still in position to land a Mayweather fight. Even during the Ramadan, Khan is still training in hopes of landing the September showdown with Mayweather.
“I go to the mosque after I open my fast – I have about five hours between fast open and fast close, so I do a quick session,” Khan said to ESPN UK. “It doesn’t have to be too hard or too long because I don’t want to pull a muscle. I hit the gym at midnight for an hour or so. I’ll be ready.”
Khan says the notion that Mayweather could choose Karim Mayfield or Ander Berto over him may be a way to distract Khan.
“Maybe he’s making me wait and distracting me, making sure I am not focused on what my job is, so that I’m not in the gym, and he’ll catch me off guard,” explained Khan. “But that’s not going to happen. I’m always in the gym, and I always keep myself fit. I don’t think that will affect me in any way.”
But Khan says it is down to him and Berto for Mayweather at this point.
“There are still talks that the Mayweather fight might still happen for me,” said Khan. “It’s now between me and Berto I really believe. Can it happen? I really think it can. I’ve not given up hope. I kind of did a couple of weeks ago but in the last couple of days I’ve heard a few new things which have motivated me again to believe that I still have a chance to have that big fight.”
Khan feels Mayweather is playing mind games at this point with September 12th being only eight weeks away.
“He’s going to mention guys who train with me or who are always around me. He’s going to mention those guys to try and get under my skin. But I know all the games that Floyd Mayweather plays. Floyd’s playing games, but this is a fight; we are professional boxers. Why not just be a man, say who you’re going to fight and get it done. Stop playing these little games. I don’t know why he’s playing these little games, I think it’s just unprofessional really from a person like Floyd Mayweather who is renowned as one of the best fighters ever. He is playing these little games just to look for every little advantage that he can get.”
Khan says he is ready to move on if need be.
“But I’m not going to let it get to me, I’m just going to keep calm and collected. If it happens, it happens, if it doesn’t, then, there will be a plan B to move onto.”
