Sergey KovalevSergey ‘Krusher’ Kovalev (27-0, 24 KO’s) will defend his light-heavyweight titles on July 25th in Las Vegas against Nadjib Mohammedi (37-3, 23KO’s), but his attention was elsewhere when speaking to Esnewsreporting.com.

Kovalev was asked about the only man who can reasonably be considered his rival; WBC champion Adonis ‘Superman’ Stevenson (26-1, 21KO’s).

However, before any topic could be broached Kovalev raised his finger and conducted a new moniker for the man he evidently holds in contempt; Adonis ‘Piece of Shit’ Stevenson.

A unification bout between the pair was looking likely a few months ago but failed to materialise for various financial and political reasons.

Now, the fight looks like a distant hopeful spectre, but in the meantime both men must get on with their careers, but it seems Kovalev’s dislike stems from this missed opportunity.

The whole subject is a contentious issue with him. He maintains that Stevenson is “running from me” and proposed a 50-50 purse split if they were ever to meet, which he feels is “more than fair.” Why that isn’t a suitable proposal is a bit of a mystery.

Stevenson holds the final piece of Kovalev’s light-heavyweight championship quartet, which if realised would make for an undeniable statement that he is the top 175-pounder walking the earth.

Additionally, the WBC belt is held aloft as that worn by the ‘lineal’ champion of the division; ‘the man who beat the man.” But that claim suffers somewhat when you trace it back seven years to a forgotten soul named Adrian Diaconu.

Kovalev vs. Stevenson, by virtue of it’s two big-hitting participants, would be a dream match salivated over by the boxing faithful, and everyone else would get on board as soon as the highlight reels of each were screened to the wider public. It is a big fight.

While it is unclear where the other side stands, Kovalev did not mix his words on the matter.

“I already proved who I am and I am ready to fight with him.”

Like many competitive, high profile, high stakes match-ups, the wait for this one looks to be lengthy. We can but hope that our patience will be rewarded and that their appearances in the meantime further whet the appetite.
