Welterweight Lee Purdy gets a surprise last-minute welterweight boxing title shot against Devon Alexander, replacing injured stable-mate Kell Brook. Call it faith, call it luck, or call it what it is, convenience, conveniently Purdy who is signed to Matchroom Sport. Hearns was allowed to replace injured Kell Brook on the matchup that was supposed to be Devon Alexander versus Kell Brook; a match that has escaped Golden Boy and Matchroom both due to three injuries.

Purdy, who has a record of 20-2-1, is ranked number four in the International Boxing Federation ratings, which makes the fight technically possible and just due, as Alexander has to face his mandatory defense. Due to the injury,  he is scheduled to face the next best opponent in the rankings.

Lee Purdy, an English boxer from Colchester who fights in the welterweight division, despite having no amateur career to speak of. Purdy was able to become the British Champion having won the British welterweight title on the 16th of April 2011 with a 5th round KO victory over Craig Watson.

Purdy lost the title in his second defense against former British light welterweight champion Colin Lynes. Purdy has since then made his way back with four straight wins – for the English welterweight title, and most recent, the IBF international welterweight strap.

A man like Purdy in this position is a dangerous dog in this fight. He’s placed in a win- win situation. The pressure will be on Alexander to not only win but look great versus what is considered to be lower-level opposition based upon Alexander’s past resume.

Purdy has the opportunity to not only win a world title but also make history becoming the first man to win a world title hailing from Colchester. His named will be forced to be mentioned with the elites in the division, like a Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley who all campaign at 147 lbs. A victory for Purdy in Atlantic City, New Jersey, could be a Hail Mary pass into the end zone to the big-times for the 25-year-old.

Alexander has been talking about fights with the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Amir Khan, but in order to do either of those two he must win and win in great fashion, as he left a sour taste in the mouths of fight fans with his performance to capture the title in Brooklyn’s Barclay Center.
