In just about 3 weeks on September 14th, the world’s attention will once again turn to the MGM grand in Las Vegas. Before Mayweather steps into the ring to fight Canelo, we will see the highly anticipated matchup between Lucas Matthysse fighting against Danny Garcia. After months of speculation whether or not the fight will happen, finally a deal was made. Many fans are looking forward to this matchup more than the main event between the two current boxing kingpins.

Matthysse is excited and understands the importance of his fight with Garcia. “This is the fight of my life and I’m going to take advantage of it.” The boxing community is split down the middle, some feel Matthysse will win by knockout and others feel Garcia will. In a sport where one punch can change the dynamic of a fight, Matthysse is not under estimating Garcia’s power, “If Danny drops me I will get back up.”

Matthysse has been criticized for being “just a power puncher” but feels some have looked past his ability to box, “I haven’t really shown my boxing ability but it’s not my fault, my opponents run from me”. Since his controversial loss with Devon Alexander in 2011, Matthysse has knocked out or stopped his last six opponents. “I don’t go for the knockout and it comes,” he continued “It’s giving me a lot of confidence, but I don’t train that way”.

It’s a common saying in the sport to say “styles make fights” and Matthysse feels the style matchup between him and Garcia will prove to be exciting, “I feel his style suits me, he’s a fighter that’s aggressive and comes forward just like I do and I like that. I think we’re going to beat each other up.” He also stated, “Hopefully he comes towards me”.

Beating Garcia will not only be Matthysse’s biggest win to date but could put him in prime position to take on boxing’s top fighter Floyd Mayweather. Fans and media have speculated that this fight was added to “The One” to showcase a new opponent should Mayweather get past Canelo. Matthysse understands the importance of winning a fight of this caliber “It’s an important fight and I know winning this fight will open doors.”
