Marcos MaidanaMarcos Maidana will not be returning to the ring in 2015.

In an exclusive interview with World Boxing News, Maidana’s manager Sebastian Contursi revealed that Maidana will not be able to return until at least 2016 – if he decides to.

The 32-year-old Maidana fought three big fights in a span of nine months, including two against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2014.

After dominating Adrien Broner to claim the WBA World welterweight title in December 2013, he earned himself a shot against the pound-for-pound king but came up short in both of his opportunities.

Maidana got married over the summer to the love of his life in Mariana Zilli and had been taking time off, but Contursi expects his fighter to be ready to challenge any of the top competitors in 2016, but as of this moment, there are no plans on the books.

“Marcos is just taking a good rest like other boxers have done in the past,” Contursi explained.

“There is no news so far regarding an exact time that Marcos will be ready, which means we have to move forward to planning a fight for next year I guess.”

Maidana’s weight increase has been much publicized. As a result, some have speculated that if he does return to the ring, it’ll likely be at a weight above his normal fighting weight of 147.

Contursi implied that he could fight as high as 154 pounds.

“It is premature to know at this point whether Marcos will fight at welterweight. Yet if Marcos was willing to fight at 154, he would have the historical opportunity to try to become the first-ever boxer from Argentina to hold three world titles in three different weight classes.

“It’s just an idea at this point, but we will know more when Marcos is ready to return,” he added.

According to photos recently uploaded by fans on Facebook, it appears that Maidana has been hitting the road lately, or in this case, the dirt to get himself back into fighting shape via cycling events.

The welterweight division would generate some entertaining fights, but Maidana would be taking a huge risk given that a lot of these cats are hungry to stake their claim to the throne, and he hasn’t been active.

The competition at 154 pounds is solid with the likes of the Charlo brothers and Erislandy Lara, but that’s nothing close to the caliber we’re seeing at 147 right now.

Besides, Maidana also has an opportunity to make history, so why not?
