Floyd Mayweather Sr., father and trainer of pound-for-pound cash king Floyd Mayweather Jr., doesn’t see eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao as a formidable opponent for his son. In fact, he doesn’t see Pacquiao as to be as good of a fighter as some of the fighters that Mayweather has easily stomped.
In September 2013, Mayweather defeated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez by majority decision. Although a majority of ringside analysts and fans had Floyd winning every round, judge C.J. Ross had the fight even; which led to her leave of absence, and she has not judged a fight since. Earlier that year in May, Mayweather defeated Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero.
Despite losing the opening couple of rounds, Floyd adjusted and stayed in the pocket, firing lead rights and right hooks at Guerrero, who looked nothing like a ghost that night. Floyd Mayweather Sr. even included Marcos Maidana into the discussion, stating that the Argentinian slugger could beat Manny Pacquiao, who his son beat twice, by decision, in 2014.
“I’m not going to say that Pacquiao is the biggest victory of his career, because people like Alvarez was a better opponent,” Mayweather Sr. said. “I believe Guerrero was a good opponent. Even the last guy he fought, Maidana was better than [Pacquiao].”
I disagree respectfully with Floyd Mayweather Sr. It’s a matter of styles, again. Styles make fights and Pacquiao is the best offensive fighter in the sport – defensive fighters are his Achilles heel – and Pacquiao-Maidana would be one heck of a fight to see on television or in person. If that fight happens – although very unlikely – I see Pacquiao dominating the fight, knocking down Maidana a handful of times, and winning by unanimous decision.
Floyd Mayweather Sr. on the other hand, had a much more graphic description from the other end of the grapevine.
“After Floyd gets through whooping his [Pacquiao’s] ass, put Pacquiao in the ring with Maidana and see what happens,” said Mayweather Sr. “Maidana is going to rape him; rape him, take his clothes off in front of 3,000 people in the house.”
