Floyd Mayweather Jr. caused a 1.8 on the Richter scale in the boxing world today by announcing an exclusive multi-fight deal with Showtime and parent company CBS, as well as confirming his long-rumored bout against Robert Guerrero on May 4.
We’ve all known now for sometime Guerrero would be the opponent even after Mayweather Jr himself tweeting out via social media that Devon Alexander was in negotiations to fight the PPV star.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has always been regarded as a very savvy businessman. Today he proved this by inking a huge deal with Showtime and CBS.
Rumors are things that are bound to happen especially when the biggest star in the sport drops a bomb as he did today. Mayweather and Larry Merchant have been linked for years since Mayweather Jr has been fighting on HBO, so it was only fair for people to assume that with the recent end of Larry Merchant’s career with HBO as a commentator, that the rumors would fly that Larry might get the gig on May 4th.
“While I’ve spoken and been in talks with many people after leaving HBO, I’ve yet to hear of this,” said Merchant speaking on the rumors that he will be not only be attending but commentating on May 4th for the Mayweather Jr. fight.
It would be fitting for Merchant to continue his questioning of Floyd as he’s done so many times in the past. With Floyd’s move to Showtime and Merchant’s recent availability it would be a perfect match to have the boat being rocked after Floyd’s big announcement. “I’ve heard nothing, this is me officially shooting the rumor down(laughter),” explained Merchant.
While one of my favorite commentators in the sport said he’s not part of the mega show on May 4th, he did leave it open by saying he hadn’t been approached about it as of yet.
