Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (27-1-1 15KOs) headlines Golden Boy Live! Friday, July 18th at Longshoreman’s Hall in San Francisco, CA. Gesta, who will be making his television debut under his new promoter, Golden Boy promotions, will be looking to extend his success from earlier this past year when he stopped Edgar Riovalle in the eighth and final round of their bout in Del Mar, CA. Gesta, who is most known for his lose to current IBF lightweight champion, Miguel Vasquez on the Manny Pacquaio-Juan Manuel Marquez IV undercard in December of 2012 is looking to return to form as the fan friendly fighter most have grown to him to be.
Gesta will face Luis Arceo (28-12-4 18KOs), a hard hitting Mexican fighter, who recently upset Misael Castillo via first round knockout in a fight not many felt he had a chance in. For Arceo, this is the biggest stage he has fought upon and with Gesta’s willingness to fight with opponents makes this a very fan friendly fight. On top of this Acreo stylistically has power that could create problems for Gesta.
In the people’s main event, Jonathan Chicas (13-1 6KOs) will face fellow unbeaten prospect Emmanuel Robles (10-0-1 3KOs) in a battle of seeing which junior welterweight is willing to take the next step and be on the fringe of the top 10. Chicas is currently coming off back to back knockout wins and the best performances of his career. For Chicas, this fight means everything for the young El Salvadorian fighting out of San Francisco, CA as his debut on Fox Sports 1 last October did not leave the impression that he had hoped as he went to a decision with Joaquin Chavez. Chavez, a fighter who had never been stopped in his career withstood a varied amount of damage from Chicas as he lost a lopsided decision. Chicas is hoping for a dynamic performance on his second outing on television and leaving an impression with the casual fight fan who will be tuned in on this vary night.
Robles on the other hand is a pure boxer, a southpaw with very little footage accessible on YouTube. Robles has already faced three foes that he was expected to lose to, winning two of those bouts and drawing the third. Robles is fine being on the road and he is fine making it ugly. Robles will try every trick in his book to make it his fight and this what makes this fight so interesting. In the co-main event, you’re seeing two very good fighters with completely opposite styles meeting at nearly the same point in their career.
Chinese boxing giant, Taishan (0-0) will be making his pro debut as the man just a fingertip smaller than seven feet tall will make his heavyweight introduction as a televised swing bout. Taishan’s also has one of the best nicknames in the sport with the name “the man with the knockout punch.”
Ricardo Pinell (8-1-1 6KOs) of San Francisco, CA will also be making a homecoming as he will fight his first bout as a professional in San Francisco. Andy Vences (7-0 3KOs) of San Jose, CA will be also taking the ring. San Jose’s Arturo Quintero (15-4-1 9KOs) will also be in action as well as Undisputed Boxing Gym’s Fabian Melendez of San Carlos, CA will be making his pro debut. Benjamin Briceno (3-1) of Hayward, CA and the pro debut of Joel Slapno of San Leandro, CA will also be on the card representing The Kennel Boxing Gym.
