metta-world-peace-birthday-shotsMetta World Peace knows boxing, at least at a higher level than most celebrities and athletes that usually attend live events. Don’t get me wrong, there are some pretty knowledgeable celebrity fight fans. Rosie Perez is a true #boxinghead, and I would put her loyalty to the sport against almost anyone. Mark Wahlberg isn’t as well-versed as Perez when it comes to watching every show, but I’ve heard him breakdown the sport in articulate ways that most boxing fans couldn’t comprehend—besides, anyone that plays Micky Ward gets a pass.

However, Metta World Peace has a genuine respect for the sport that makes his take a viable one, at least from a fan’s perspective.

MWP recently broke down his opinion on the upcoming Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao fight scheduled for May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He will be in attendance, telling Dontae’s Boxing Nation that he is picking Mayweather to win, but believes we will be in for an entertaining fight.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Metta World Peace said on a video from Dontae’s Boxing Nation’s YouTube channel. Pacquiao is not going to run. Floyd is not going to run. Neither of these fighters is going to run. Floyd, I don’t know what he’s going to do, you know. I’m not in his training camp or nothing’, he’s going to stay in the pocket.

“He hasn’t run in his last five fights, or he hasn’t boxed [as much] his last couple fights, he’s entertained in his last couple fights. He stayed right in the middle of the ring, and it started with Victor Ortiz. He stayed right there, and that’s where it started at and I think he’s going to do the same thing here.”

Picking Floyd to win has seemed like the safe pick for years now, but a growing consensus amongst boxing enthusiasts suggests that Pacquiao has a chance to win and could even get a decision. However, the attitude has changed for some regarding the perceived boring nature of the fight, and people are beginning to come around to the idea that Pacquiao will help make this fight exciting to watch.

“Manny wants to entertain the crowd, so you know Manny’s not going anywhere. It’s just going to be a great fight,” World Peace said.

In the end, MWP is sticking to his pick and his logic is sound, although his opinion on Floyd being more aggressive early in the fight is a bold theory for the fighter known for his defensive prowess.

“I see Floyd winning. Manny is going to throw a lot of punches. Floyd, I just can’t see him waiting until the later rounds to time him. I don’t know, [Floyd] is a great boxer so I’m not going to act like I know what he’s thinking, but as a fan I can see him making Manny think a little bit, and I can see Manny not really caring and still punching.
