After years of lobbying for women’s boxing we got the fight that had the hype behind it last Saturday. Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano put on a hell of a show and it was action packed. Now that the attention is high on women’s boxing it is time for other fights to be made that can deliver action and keep the ball rolling.

Last year Mikaela Mayer had the type of fight that women’s boxing needed against Maiva Hamadouche. That fight killed but there was not much attention on it as there should have been. Mayer has gone on and continued fighting the same action packed style and continues to deliver fights that are fan friendly but if she wants to become undisputed there are still two fights that have to be made.

Choi Hyun-mi holds a title and it is a fight Mayer would like but according to Mayer “Choi and her team are the worst. Impossible to work with. WBA needs to strip her or enforce a mandatory against someone credible.”

The other option is the one that would get fight fans at least on this side of the globe excited and that is a fight with Alycia Baumgardner.

Mayer spoke with Cecilia Brækhus recently and Brækhus had mentioned that with Mayer’s size she could compete at 147 pounds. Mayer made it clear what was keeping her at 130 pounds.

“When I met Cecilia last night (April 30th) she said, ‘wow you’re big. You could be a 147 pounder.’ I’m only staying at 130 for the fans. But if Alycia Baumgardner won’t give me the fight this year I’m going up. She’ll miss out & the fans will miss out. The time is now.”

Baumgardner responded, “yo ass whooping coming sooner than you think.”

That ended up setting up a small back and forth on Twitter with Mayer responding.

MM: Eyyy that’s what I like to hear baby. Now you sound like a champion!

    AB: Baumgardner/Mayer Next Up!

MM: Lol couldn’t get the fight with Choi like u wanted huh?? Train hard, see ya soon.

AB: Been that w/out your validation.

AB: Until my team finalizes a fight with Mayer, everything is all talk.

It’s beginning to get heated and all eyes are on the women’s division to see what’s next. This fight could produce fireworks and that is exactly what Mayer is looking for. Now we just need to the promoters to work together or else Mayer will be moving up which is not a bad option either.
