Orlando Salido last stepped in the ring on January 19th when he stepped in the ring against Miguel “Mikey” Garcia losing a match in which he was outclassed but he did not give up. Salido will be stepping foot inside the ring to fight for that very same title that he lost to Garcia against Orlando Cruz, an openly gay boxer from Puerto Rico whose popularity has risen tremendously since coming out of the closet. Salido couldn’t be happier to be fighting for his old title but the quickness of the opportunity did suprise him. ” I was a little surprised but I am happy that I have been given an opportunity to fight for the title again,” said Salido.
As far as when the fight will take place or an what network it is unsure but the word that is going around is that the fight will take place in Mexico. “They still have not told me a date or what network the fight will be on. I am just preparing for the fight. I think the fight will be on HBO. I feel happy and motivated that I am fighting in front of my people and they will see that I still have a lot left.”
Cruz is no pushover and the fact that he is gay will not be a factor going into the fight. “He is a good technical fighter who had a good amateur career,” said Salido. When Cruz first came out many fighters said they would not face him but where others fail, Salido sees an opportunity. “We are all humans. I just want to win the world title. It is a big event. ”
Even though Salido is focused on the fight with Cruz, thoughts of Garcia still linger in his mind. “The fight with Mikey Garcia is a thorn in my side. I know what I have to win. I don’t know what happened with me that night. Mikey fought a good fight but there were four rounds left. Mikey knew he was ahead and he could have continued but didn’t want to continue. If everything goes good I would like a rematch with Mikey Garcia. It wasn’t my night but I can do better and win in the rematch.”
