Randall Bailey began his career with 21 wins, all of which by knockout, but the 39 year-old boxer now is facing a new battle; finding an opponent. “These guys are letting their handlers dictate who they fight…not wanting to fight dangerous guys”Bailey said. This statement comes days after an open letter to 147 lbs. power puncher Keith Thurman asking for a fight.

“I want to get back in the ring. All Julio Diaz had to do was say he wanted the fight with Keith Thurman and [Diaz] got it. Why can’t I get it? I want to fight.”Bailey explained as he began to elaborate. As Bailey further went on to explain “I asked to fight Josesito Lopez, Jesus Soto-Karass, they won’t give me those type of fights. Put me in with one of these guys, Josesito Lopez and Soto-Karass stay fighting on television while winning and losing.”Bailey said with frustration. “…maybe it’s because I can’t speak Spanish”Bailey continued confused to why he can’t get a fight.

The truth is Bailey is not lying about his inactivity has only fought one time since I saw him fight in person in Brooklyn, NY in October of 2012. His lone fight between that bout was against Humberto Toledo last November, a fight he won via disqualification. “I can’t sit back for a half of a year. I am not Floyd Mayweather, I have to stay busy.”Bailey, who was out of the ring for nine months prior to his upset victory of Mike Jones that crowned him the IBF Welterweight champion has found finding the fight is a battle in it of itself.

“The Minnesota card was cancelled the week of the fight.”Bailey explained as he was counting on getting action before the card fell through. For Bailey believes that the risk to reward for untested prospects is too great for many to dare get in the ring. “A lot of these fighters are more worried about how they look on the red carpet then they are, who they fight. They’re boxing divas.”

One fighter who learned the hard way was Mike Jones, a highly touted prospect, who was knocked out by Bailey in the IBF Welterweight title fight after Andre Berto gave up the belt to fight Victor Ortiz. After catching Jones in the round prior Bailey explained that he knew about the mentality of Jones’trainer that assisted him. “Mike Jones trainer was a really arrogant guy and I knew he would tell him to come back and try to take control of the ring. I saw Mike Jones slowing down and the punches at [1]47 just don’t hurt me. When I got to him the first time the bell saved him, he came out the next round…I baited him in.”Bailey went into great detail explaining how he noticed that Jones was tucking his head inside the jab and keeping it straight until Bailey connected with a fight ending uppercut.

As for his first title defense against Devon Alexander, Bailey had a candid response. “Devon Alexander wasn’t in position to fight at the time, but he wanted to fight so we fought, that was the worst [expletive] fight I have ever been in, the only thing I got was head butt.”as Bailey showed frustration to a clinch heavy fight that Alexander implemented against him. Still for Bailey, it’s the sentiment of you want to fight, then let’s fight and that today it is simply just big business, dollars and cents without as much of the warrior mentality. “These guys want soft touches until they get to the spot to get as much money as possible, then if they lose oh well.”

“It’s like a double edge [sword], I know I am in the boxing business, I want to finish in a year or year and a half. I told myself I would hang it up after ten losses and fifty wins whatever came first.”Bailey explained as he is nearly done with his career, but wants one last go of things, but sadly appears more stagnant than ever. Bailey is calling out Thurman, because no one else is and the fact that to him Thurman is untested. “I grew up watching Tuesday Night Fights, real wars. I want Thurman”Bailey remarked. As the man whom a visiting Tommy Brooks taught a simple technique when he was 16 to his right hand that turned him in to a vivacious career power puncher now seeks one last expedition on the main stage, the question is will he get?
