June 28th was a great night for boxing in Red Deer, Alberta where pros and amateurs alike put on a great show at the Sheraton Hotel Events Centre.

Lightweight Cam O’Connell (4-0-1, 3KO’s), the hometown fighter made his long awaited debut at home as a professional putting on an impressive performance defeating Luis Arjona (3-2-1, 1KO) of Progreso, Yucatan, Mexico in the third round after connecting a right uppercut that sent Arjona down for a TKO victory. Arjona had gone down earlier in the fight after a vicious onslaught. Though it may have seemed easy, Arjona; who was all smiles from the weigh in till even after the fight took the fight to O’Connell.

In the co-main even Kenneth Council (4-0, 3KO’s) from Tennessee won a unanimous decision in a war with Ted Reno (3-7-2) of Calgary in a junior middleweight bout. Both fighters squared up for a majority of the fight and had their moments. Council impressed with his ability to take and dish out a punch whereas Reno showed that a record could be deceiving when looked at on paper with his gutsy performance.

In the opening bout for the professional portion Poland born Lukasz Wierzbicki (1-0) who fights out of Calgary, Alberta was very impressive in his debut when he took on and beat Antonio Dos Santos (2-6, 1KO) from Vancouver in a welterweight bout. Dos Santos is a very awkward fighter who is wiry and all over the place.
