Who Needs Who More? Mayweather or Canelo?

Floyd “Money” Mayweather easily disposed of his opponent Robert Guerrero by thoroughly out-boxing Guerrero throughout the entire fight. He faced and beat his mandatory challenger so who is there left for him to fight at 147 pounds? There is no chance of fighting Manny Pacquiao who fights for Top Rank and fights on HBO. Amir Khan is still a possibility but fans are not high on it but if it were to be made, would still buy it? Andre Berto is also in consideration seeing as he is the gatekeeper to fight Floyd, it could happen should Al Haymon allow his fighters to fight each other. Another fighter whose name Floyd has brought up is Devon “The Great” Alexander. Should Alexander win in impressive fashion and possibly fight and beat a name 147 pounder then that is definitely a possibility.

But a move up in weight against Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is the best fight for Mayweather, financially. Alvarez has a huge Mexican and Mexican-American following; possibly even bigger than Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The event would fill an arena and sell out quickly especially with Canelo’s victory over former champion Austin Trout.

Is there more risk than reward for Mayweather should he take the fight? His 0 in the loss column is a big deal for him but every man can fall victim to greed and we all know how much “Money” loves money, and the Canelo fight would generate a ton of money for both fighters and has fight/event of the year written all over it. Should Mayweather lose that fight, a rematch would generate a lot more money and hype than any fight he has ever been in.

Does he need the fight with Canelo? Yes, he does. His mega fight against Manny Pacquiao never happened and Canelo is aligned with Golden Boy Promotions, who is an ally and pseudo co-promoter of Floyd.

After the Guerrero fight Mayweather was asked about a possibility of fighting Canelo and completely avoided the question. “I’m going home 2 rest & then talk about my next move with my team,” said Mayweather.

Should a fight with Canelo not happen, Canelo would more than likely fight Miguel Cotto and we will be wondering who is a worthy challenger to fight Mayweather as so many fighters have unanswered questions about themselves at the present time.
